My first thought with the color yellow is that it represents happiness and it is also the color that is being used the most for warning signs to catch attention. For example, taxi is most of the countries in the world are painted yellow for people to easily recognize them, and we can often find bright, yellow strips on construction and athletic uniforms for vehicles to spot them and avoid accidents. There are also many organic things in nature that are different shades of yellow such fruits, flowers, animals and insects.

According to Oxford English Dictionary, the earliest known use of the word “yellow” is English is from The Epinal Glossary in the year 700.

Culturally speaking, yellow has a strong historical association in China, and it means glory and wisdom. Therefore, the emperors in every dynasty in Chinese history wear a yellow gown in their throne to symbolize their glory. In addition, only the members of the imperial family were permitted to wear yellow to distinguish them from the civilians. Another fun fact with yellow in China is that there are five directions in an ancient Chinese compass, north, south, east, west and middle; each direction is represented by a color and middle being painted in yellow to represent the idea of the ancient China being the middle kingdom in the world. Interestingly, the ancient Maya associated yellow with south, and it also means precious and ripe in its Maya glyph. In Italy, yellow has an association with both fictional and non-fictional crime stories since the first crime novels published in Italy had yellow covers back in 1930.

Emotionally, being the brightest color in the hue of spectrum, the color yellow symbolizes joy, happiness, cheerfulness, hope, fun and creativity. Yellow is the best color to create enthusiasm for life and can awaken greater confidence and optimism. However, it is also related to the mind and the intellect,  It is the color which resonates with the left or logic side of the brain stimulating our mental faculties and creating mental perception.
